According to Consumer Reports, new gas fireplaces manufactured after Jan. 1. 2015 require a mesh safety screen that fits over the glass because the glass panels become as hot as 1328 degrees Fahrenheit. The super-heated glass can instantly cause 3rd degree burns.  If you have a gas fireplace manufactured prior to 2015, contact the manufacturer regarding the safety barrier. More information is available at www.safefireplacetips.com.  If you converted a wood-burning fireplace to gas and it has glass doors that you open when the gas is on, this warning does not apply.  (Consumer Reports, Feb. 2016)
